Students choose their representatives through a school election.
How the election works
Students who want to run for president, vice president or class representative submit a written essay setting out their ideas for the school. Candidates then present to the student body across a series of grade level debates, and answer questions from their classmates.
Candidates also campaign around school. Posters go up in the hallways, candidates talk to classmates about what they want to change, and the school is noisier than usual for a week. Then every student from Grade 5 through Grade 12 votes by secret ballot.

What the council does once elected
It meets regularly to plan events, to raise issues on behalf of classmates, and to work with teachers and the administration on how the school runs. It organises the spirit days, the themed dress up events, the holiday celebrations, the school competitions and the fundraisers, and it runs community service projects that students propose themselves.
It also plays a direct part in welcoming new students at the start of each year. Student representatives help new classmates get to know the school.
The council president also chairs the School Pride Committee, which is the formal route between students and the administration. The committee gives students a way to raise suggestions with school leaders.
Standing, or helping
It is one of the ways students here learn to lead, to collaborate and to take responsibility for something bigger than themselves. And if public speaking is not your thing, there is plenty to do behind the scenes.
