The Middle Years Programme
What MYP candidacy means, exactly.
The MYP is the IB programme for students aged 11 to 16. It teaches subjects through inquiry, asks students to connect them to each other and to the world outside school, and builds the research and writing habits the IB Diploma needs in Grade 11.
IAS Middle School has been a candidate school since 2025. That means we are working through the IB authorisation process and aligning our teaching with the MYP framework. Only schools authorised by the International Baccalaureate Organization can offer the Middle Years Programme. Candidate status is a stage in that process and does not guarantee that authorisation will be granted.

What changes, and when.
A new building and a full timetable
Students move from Dembego 12 to the main building at Dembego 18. Students have a different specialist teacher for each subject. French and German both start, unless a student is in EAL.
Project work counts
More of the grade comes from projects than from tests. Students plan projects, work in groups and receive marks for their method as well as their answer.
French or German, not both
Students keep one language and drop the other. This is also the year the school starts preparing them for Grade 9, where coursework begins to count towards a diploma.

Music, art, physical education and world languages, using the ICT computer lab and the science laboratory.

English
The language of instruction in every subject.
Polish
Polish as a second language, for students who arrive without it. It teaches everyday communication, not examination Polish.
DE
French and German
Both start in Grade 6 and both are compulsory in Grades 6 and 7. From Grade 8 students keep one.
The rule: students in the EAL programme do not take Polish, French or German. English support is intensive and runs in those periods. Ask admissions which language classes your child would attend.

Every student starts the year with a planner.
Phones are handed in at the start of the day in Middle School, so the planning happens on paper. Each student is given the school’s own Yearly Academic Planner in the first week.
The planner includes weekly schedules and activities based on the MYP approaches to learning. Students use it to record homework and practise organising their time.
