How IAS places children by age
IAS follows the American system, so the grade depends on your child’s age on 1 September of the school year they join, and the same rule applies when a child starts in February, halfway through that year.

Questions families ask
How does IAS decide which grade my child joins?
By age on 1 September. Admissions uses the school’s own age table, checks the last certificate from your child’s current school, then confirms the grade after a conversation with your family.
My child’s birthday is close to 1 September. What then?
The calculator tells you when a result is close. A child near the line can do well in either grade, and admissions will advise which one suits your child.
Can my child start in the middle of the school year?
Yes. Term 2 of 2026/27 starts in February 2027, and you can apply for that start now. Places during the year depend on the class, so talk to admissions early.
Why is the Polish klasa sometimes lower?
Polish schools group children by calendar year of birth, and a child starts klasa 1 in September of the year they turn 7, while IAS counts age on 1 September. So a child born between January and August is often one grade ahead at IAS.
Which diploma does my child work towards in Grades 11 and 12?
IAS offers three diploma routes: the IB Diploma Programme, taught in Grades 11 and 12, the American High School Diploma and the Polish Matura. Students who graduate with the IB or the Matura also receive the American diploma. Admissions will talk you through which route fits your child.
