How IAS teaches students to use AI responsibly

AI use by school stage, checking generated answers and the rules on authorship and citation.

How IAS teaches students to use AI responsibly

At IAS, we teach students to check information produced by AI and to explain how they used a tool. The rules depend on the student’s age and the task set by the teacher.

Authorship and citation

The IB does not regard work generated by AI as the student’s own. If generated material is included in an assessment, it must be clearly identified and appropriately referenced. Citing it does not make it original student work. Teachers explain what is permitted for each assignment.

Kindergarten to Grade 5

AI tools are not used in these classrooms. Pupils practise reading, handwriting, explaining answers and solving problems step by step.

Grades 6 to 8

Students begin supervised work with AI. They check generated answers for errors and bias, compare them with other sources and explain their assessment. The teacher sets the task and the limits on tool use.

Grades 9 to 12

Students may use AI in academic and creative work under the rules for the assignment. They must identify generated material, check sources and submit work that reflects their own understanding. IB Diploma assessments follow IB academic integrity requirements.

Questions from families

Ask your child’s teacher about the rules for a particular subject or homework task. It can also help to discuss which parts your child completed independently and how they checked information from an AI tool.

Teachers continue professional development on responsible AI use. Current school guidance and subject requirements should be checked with the teacher. The IB’s approach is explained on its AI in learning, teaching and assessment page.
